Dental tip from the desk of Anthony S. Prezioso DMD
October is a frightening time for parents and dentists because of Halloween candy. Here are some Halloween dental tips to help keep your children’s smile healthy;
Schedule a “candy time” with a snack, or meal, not in-between. The presence of additional food increases the production of saliva in the mouth which helps break down sugar quickly. It is also easier to control brushing and flossing immediately after consumption.
If you are concerned about the amount of candy, try rationing it over several weeks. Parents and dentist have also been known to start a buy back program. You can set a limit of 1-5 cents per item or by the pound.
Here is a list of great alternatives to candy to hand out;
Sugar free gum
Stickers
Party favor sunglasses or noise makers
Pencils with Halloween erasers
Temporary tattoos
Small bottles of bubbles
